THE DANCER

©1975 Lyrics and music by Rick Edwards

She was a dancer at a downtown go-go club

Her husband was a drunkard who smoked old cigar stubs

Her boyfriend was a guitar playin’, country western man

Who roamed the bars and honky-tonks playin’ one night stands

Many times she’s tried to straighten out her life but failed

Searchin’ for the cross on which Jesus Christ was nailed

But she had a friend who had a friend who had some dope

So the needle took her soul, stole her heart and lost her hope

I have seen dreams vanish in a bottle

I have seen the needle makin’ hollow eyes

And though they all go to different parties

They’ll all be in the same disguise

She is still a dancin’, blue-eyed, bombshell of a gal

Though she has another boyfriend and a different set of pals

Her Mother has her children and the devil has her soul

Her body has a price tag for her heart is frozen cold

But I have seen her laughin’ as she’d wink at me in jest

And whisper words like Broadway and the stage, her final quest

But why she lost her courage, gave up her dreams and ran

This guitar playin, country western man can’t understand

Chorus
